The editor has written me that he is in favor of avoiding ‘the notion that the artist is a kind of ape that has to be explained by the civilized critic’. This should be good news to both artists and apes". Sol Lewitt It helps to know the civilized critic mentionned was a verbal intellectual, translating the non-verbal language of art to a prinarily literate audience.

That said, the long awaited ‘death of painting’ is an unrealistic expectation.  The study of non-verbal languages dates back to Charles Darwin, and scientists have repeatedly weighted in since. But it’s only recently that we became aware of images as a visual language. Kevin Zeng Hu at MIT Media Lab writes “we all know how unwieldy texting can be and how much context can be lost, especially emotional context. Once you make it visual, you have a higher bandwidth to convey nuance.” Painting cannot die anymore than literature; both offer different kinds of notations in use since the dawn of civilization.

As a result, painting returns from exile and explain itself to the postmodern audience. These large cardboard paintings squint at cultural beliefs. These paintings comment on navigating a cultural system, on how to address hidden authoritarian structures, institutional devices, and power imbalances. We appreciate the visual grammar, and witness how art keeps up with politics These paintings not only let us to see the world differently, they call our attention to how we feel about it.
