Evil Ducky at Centennial College's East York campus is the dark star,
a deviant version of a child's traditional yellow rubber ducky.

by Kinga Jakab

This anticipated innocence at first makes the spectator trust Ducky. Upon closer inspection, we realize Evil Ducky is causing a ruckus everywhere he goes: Evil Ducky in Chaos Theory, Evil Ducky in Too Much to Drink, Evil Ducky and The Fountain of Doom - the mischievous grin on his bill always the same, his evil ducky horns always standing upright. Legrady places Evil Ducky into timely situations, such as Evil Ducky and The Sea of Spam, where printouts of spam email surround Ducky promising Xanax, Ambien and large sums of money.

Legrady seems to suggest that Evil Ducky is the little devil on the shoulder of every sticky situation in history. For example, Evil Ducky is global warming; Evil Ducky is poaching whales and selling five for a dollar; Evil Ducky is "Evil McDuck" at McDonald's.

Legrady's use of text with image might be compared with surrealist, Renee Magritte's collection, "The Treachery of Images.", Magritte forced the brain to exercise, for example, by painting a pipe with the words "ceci n'est pas une pipe" (This is not a pipe) right underneath.

The brain has to take time to process exactly what is happening before its eyes; it is not an automatic understanding, but a necessary interpretation, and such is true for Legrady's unique Evil Ducky series. The show is on at 951 Carlaw Ave.
