THE BUTTERFLIES
Ecology, beauty, and art.

Butterflies face a wide range of threats including habitat loss, climate change, disease, pesticides, and invasive plants. More localized threats, such as over grazing and roadside mowing, can also have negative consequences.

In chaos theory the Butterfly Effect shows how a q butterfly beating its wings in New York can cause a storm over Tokyo. This work highlighting butterflies and beauty, reminds us of the need for both in nature and in art. Paul Dirac said that when he sees beauty in his equations, he knows he’s on the path of progress. Here we ask if the science behind beauty also applies to visual art.

In visual art just as in music we become aware of conversations within conversations; we experience patterns, sequences, bridges, opposition and harmonies, we feel melodic, periodic, or melancholic as the work moves us. Music is a language, an acoustic language, just as visual language describes things whose subtlety is lost when explained in words. Since the intellect is but one mode of thinking, visual language expands the bandwidth tp include that which cannot be explained in words.
